How to Hygge Your Way Through Winter
With winter being well and truly here, but the shine and glitter of the festive period just a fading memory- there’s no better time to Hygge.
If you haven’t heard of Hygge yet – pronounced hue-gah – where have you been hiding? Hygge is the newest trend cosy-ing its way into the hearts of many a home owner across the globe. Originating in Denmark, the concept is all about being cosy, warm, and comfortable. Swapping kindles for real books, nights in front of the TV for nights in front of the fire, and silk pyjamas for snuggle robes and big socks – it’s the perfect cure for the winter blues.
Hygge has taken over Pinterest boards and Tumblr feeds, but how can you grab a piece of it for yourself? It’s actually much easier than you might think. Just a few simple steps and you’ll be wondering how you ever survived the winter months without it.
Dim Your Lights
Bright, harsh lighting is never very cosy, so warm up your living space by dimming yours. You have a few options for this – swap all your light bulbs for the low wattage variety, stock up on candles, or even get that fireplace lit that you never bother with anymore. All of these things help to give your room a nice, warm glow that instantly makes you feel cosy.
Embrace Wintery Food and Drink
There’s nothing better than enjoying seasonal foods, and winter produces some of the best. With butternut squash soup, roasted parsnips and sweet, tangy oranges – can you think of anything better? But, you don’t need to stop at food. Warm up your cold bones with steaming cups of hot chocolate – floating marshmallows optional -or spiced teas and infusions.

Winter is the perfect time to up your reading game, with parties being few and far between, and the lure of staying warm keeping you in your fluffy PJ’s – get lost in those stories that you’ll never forget.
When was the last time you received a handwritten letter? In a world full of emails and Facebook messages, why not show your loved ones just how special they are by penning little love notes? It’s also a great excuse to do some stationary shopping!
Put Down Your Phone
Don’t panic. Although being parted from the outside world for any period of time can be incredibly stressful nowadays – it really shouldn’t be. Take some time totally to yourself. Run a bath, try some meditation, whatever you fancy – just keep the technology away. Just one hour with no phone, internet, TV, anything. You’ll be surprised at how liberating it can be to simply detach yourself. And who knows? Maybe you’ll love it so much that you end up deleting all your social media accounts (but please don’t – we’d miss you!).
Just remember, however you Hygge – at the end of the day it’s all about feeling comfortable and at peace. Maybe for you, all you need is to be with your family, or be totally alone for 5 minutes. It doesn’t matter how you Hygge, as long as you do.
