European Cannonball Run 2016

Last week we had a member ask us to arrange for their Aston Martin to be entered into the 2016 European Cannonball Run. This exciting event has been taking place for fourteen years, involving around 1,200 petrol heads in the annual event. This year’s event will take place between the 26th of June and the 1st of July and, like every year, the locations will remain top secret until the last possible moment.

The race takes place over a week, with drivers only finding out the route of the next leg on the morning of each day. The week-long event is perfect for those who love fast cars and driving – and for those who are looking to get a little more out of life.

The race will cover 2,500 miles over a six day period with competitors put up in the finest of Europe’s five star hotels, sampling the very best local food and drink and enjoying a black tie gala dinner and after party at the end of the week.

The original race was created by rebellious journalist Brock Yates who in response (and defiance) of the new 55 mph speed limit launched the “Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash”. The race was inspired by Erwin G. “Cannonball” Baker – an American who went on to set all 143 American distance records, including a coast to coast solo drive lasting 53 and a half hours (averaging 50mph) in 1933.

The race even inspired the 1981 film “Cannonball Run” with Roger Moore and Burt Reynolds which focused on the real races of the 1970’s, and although the races all but died out in the USA that wasn’t the end of the Cannonball Run. The name was resurrected in Europe in 2002 and the races have been a popular event since then.

Since 2002 the annual race has taken place in locations all over Europe, offering the same spirit of the original event but with newer, faster cars and a multitude of memorable routes. Each day offers breathtaking scenery and demanding roads before the participants enjoy relaxing evenings in some of the very best hotels Europe has to offer.

The nature of the race is very unpredictable as racers are kept in the dark about the locations and route until each morning of the six day race. In 2013 the race began in the UK and travelled through France and down into Spain, whilst other years have taken drivers through the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. Whilst there is no guarantee on where you will end up – every race visits a world class motor sport circuit.

Where the race will take place this year is anyone’s guess. However, we at Keys Lifestyle Concierge will be at the race and following the journey – wherever the road takes us. If you’re interested in taking part in the Cannonball Run give your concierge a call to see how we can help.
